Configuration and Expansion - Up to 144 Drives
The modular design of the PowerVault MD1120 direct attached storage array is engineered for easy expansion - giving you more room to store data from your server. Up to six PowerVault MD1120 24 -drive expansion enclosures can be connected to a dual port PERC6/E giving you between 24 and 144 disk drives options. To keep management simple the PowerVault MD1120 connects to and can be controlled by a single PERC RAID controller equipped PowerEdge server. Configure the specific combination of storage resources you need now, and add more storage volume later, quickly and easily.
Don't sacrifice capacity for performance, the PowerVault MD1120 now supports 300GB 10K drives, doubling the capacity of the array.

2.5" SAS Drives for Performance
The PowerVault MD1120 is Dell's first storage array to feature 2.5-inch SAS drive technology that consume 70% less space and use up to 50% less power than the 3.5" drives. When configured with SAS disk drives, the PowerVault MD1120 RAID storage array can deliver the speed, performance and reliability to satisfy mainstream and demanding single server applications such as email or database applications that store active and frequently changing information. SAS specifies a transfer rate of 3.0 Gbps (300 MB/sec) for each drive on the channel to help provide these high levels of performance. Now with 300GB drives, there is no need to trade performance for capacity. The PowerVault MD1120 supports up to 7.2TB of data per enclosure.

Hot Swappable
The hot-swappable technology of the PowerVault MD 1120 direct attached storage array allows you to remove and replace drives even when your system is operating, no need to turn it off, and no need to reboot - new drives are available right away. The unique combination Small Form Factor SAS drive technology and high spindle count in one modular form gives the PowerVault MD1120 external RAID storage array it's edge over the MD1000 for fast access storage when your applications needs it.

Maximize Efficiency
The small form factor of the PowerVault MD1120 direct attached storage array helps manage power, heat, and space consumption in your data center. In fact, 2.5" disks consume up to 50% less power and 70% less space than 3.5" drives. Additionally, the MD1120 uses high-efficiency power supplies and variable speed, temperature controlled fans to help minimize power consumption.

PERC RAID Controller
The PowerVault MD1120 direct attached storage leverages and external PERC RAID controller with the best available in-class PCI Express interface, offering excellent performance for enterprise. The configuration of the PERC RAID controller enables the software to recognize the entire array as a single unit, regardless of how many disks you have activated for storage in the array, helping to increase reliability and fault tolerance. PERC 6/E offers:
- Redundant connections offering failover protection, static load balancing and performance improvement over non-redundant path systems.
- Enclosure firmware and hard disk drive firmware updated to be done while the system is online, reducing the impact to critical storage systems and enabling “on the fly” updates.
- Advanced import enables administrators to import, or migrate, disk arrays created by a different PERC controller while the server remains online. The controllers can even import partial, or degraded, arrays and provide array preview capabilities before import to further enhance data serviceability.
- Supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Dell PowerVault external RAID storage is engineered to work optimally with Dell PowerEdge servers. Dell OpenManageTM Storage Manager Software can manage both the external array and internal storage within the server itself. Streamlining storage management through a single, common interface helps reduce resource load on the system, and is easier to navigate for the user as well.
